1.5Collage and crease

Brief

Demonstrate your exploration of the form shape, drape, volume and three -dimensional qualities of your three achieve textile items through two dimensional collage.

I began by looking through old magazines and my sewing and knitting off cuts. I also have quite a few found and saved items in my studio space.

After trying a few backround options, including white paper and a cardboard box I  decided upon A3 brown heavy paper, a simple natural background for my first collage item, the Victorian cuff. I wanted to gather similar coloured images but also natural looking textures and images to represent the natural fabric that the cuffs are made of and the drape and shape.

Cuff shape and drape shown with crunched up paper, orange cotton ribbon and black marker pen. Also stitched on bottom with naturally dyed cotton to show the pattern on cuff.

Images for brown natural fibres; basket, brown palm fibre, natural brush fibre and a natural wall colour from a magazine. These shades of brown represent the natural colour of the cuff ,the basket representing the structured embroidery,  pattern and the natural palm fibre showing the two shades of colour of the cuff.

The flower representing the delicacy of the fabric and the vintage and melancholic feel. The corrugated cardboard showing the structured stitching on the cuff.

The beige cotton edging with pops of colour representing the lace edging.

Old sewing pattern cut to show lightness of fabric  delicacy and drape.

I will add more to my collage,  I have taped on images to make sure I'm happy before I stick them on card. I will use the white tape however for the cuff I made and a few other pieces for my collages.

I had a few cut out pieces that didn't work for the overall look so I will look again for more suitable additions.  It is a lovely organic process, seeing what does and doesn't work. I like how it builds slowly, I saved paper as I found it for items 2&3 and stored them in a felt bowl.

Item 2.
Poncho A5 black card

I wanted to show a more modern version rather than a 70's style of the poncho, the definite shape and structure of the knitwear, the grid pattern representing the 'box stitch ''.

The heavy texture and the shape and definite pattern of the cable with white tape. I also wanted to show the fringing with different materials, wool, card and crepe paper., the lightness and flow of fringing.

Item 3
Cobain cardigan

A4 brown paper

This cardigan is an iconic piece of knitwear representing the 90's indie scene.  The mohair is matted and really worn, flat and dense from wear giving the appearance not dissimilar to a tree trunk marking.
The moss green colour of the cardigan reminds me of dense greenery ,scrubland even.
Burn mark on paper showing the mark and burn on pocket.

I built a collage around urban concrete images and lots of dense greenery to show the density of the mohair. I arranged the images overlapping a bit like an indie club wall with layers of previous band images on top of each other.
There is a burn mark on the collage on the bottom corner.

I printed a detailed photo of some of my mohair knitting and tore it to layer on the collage representing the real texture of mohair.
