What are textiles?

In your own words, write a definition of 'textiles ' in its broader sense. What materials do you consider to be ' textile ' materials?. When is a material not a textile? Can you identify any examples?

I have decided to answer this question first without any research to see what my understanding of textiles are.

Textiles can be any woven material that can be made into a fabric for wearing, household items or even industrial use. Everything from natural fibres such as cotton and linen , pineapple and nettle fibre to man made polyester. Acrylics can be used in art and jewellery making, textiles are in all industry everywhere from the building industry to fashion.

I decided to look up that actual definition of textiles after answering the question and feel my answer was broad but I hadn't considered glass, asbestos or jute or more unusual uses of woven materials.

Official definition:

There are four main sources, animal wool and silk  ,plant, cotton glac, jute, bamboo, mineral, asbestos, glass fibre and synthetic nylon, acrylic and rayon.

In what ways could textiles have stories or narratives attached to them?

Textiles can have a rich historic narrative,  you can learn a lot from textiles about culture, religion and beliefs .We can also date events through textiles and lifestyles are hugely connected to textile choices, quality of fibre and certain fabrics used depending on the climate.

We also have personal connection to fabrics and textiles,we remember events and loved ones through fabric, an example of this is a memory cloth or travel blanket with patches sewn on. If we take time to reflect we all have textiles that are filled with memory and attachment.
