My first ideas developed by
writing down 'free associating ' around my chosen theme 'Balance and Harmony'.
I found my ideas developed organically as I worked, my flat lays changed and as
I tried different layouts and I swapped out objects that didn't work. I feel
this was a great exercise to focus my ideas around shapes and textures.
I was excited to start each
section and understood the reason and flow of it. I found the drawing aspect
quite difficult as I had a total mental block around sketching. I enjoyed the
archive research and loved the nostalgic connection of each piece I chose.
As I worked on each
assignment I experimented with different mediums from pencil to charcoal , I
connected more with charcoal and water-colour paints and surprisingly my
favourite was gouache, all of these mediums I had never used so it was lovely
to immerse myself in them and figure out what works for me going forward. I
feel my connection with charcoal and gouache led me to the style I like, dreamy
colours, simple shapes. I have definitely developed a style through this
experimentation and look forward to exploring it more, I also really enjoyed
collage and using random objects for mark making, which I will explore further
my least favourite was pencil as I am not confident using it.
I have gained lots of skills, I
have learnt what mediums I like to use and I have learnt that failures are
important and part of the learning process, some things just didn't work and
I'm really comfortable with that and find it drives me more.
I have been exposed to artists
and designers though research which has influenced me in a positive way.
I am excited to see my work develop,
I have a clearer idea of my style, I feel it will be modern with a nostalgic
use of colour, a dreamy eclectic mix. I will incorporate gouache, felt markers,
tape and collage in work going forward.
