Brief
This assignment asks you to explore the creation of a series of small collection of stitched textiles inspired and informed by your drawings and you stitched paper explorations.
Develop a series of three stitched pieces showing
. A sense of repetition
.variety of scale
. A placement design.
I have decided to develop some of my stitched paper pieces further.
Focusing on the surface quality of the yellow tree ,the texture of the gouache representing the flowers on the tree and focusing on variety of scale.
I naturally dyed recycled white cotton pouches for 'life long' bags that were being binned in work. I mordanted the cotton with soya milk to prepare the cotton to absorb a birch leaf dye bath. I brewed the dye for an hour to let the colour develop, I then added the cotton to the dye bath brewing it until I was happy with the colour development. I then washed the cotton and let it dry.
My next chosen piece is the teasle ,thistle head. I was focused on a placement design for this piece. I decided to use some avocado dyed linen from a previous sewing project to layre and stitch ,focusing on just one of the teasle heads, I cut the fabric up randomly and stitched it with black mohair , using similar stitches to ones I used in my sample squares. Long loose stitches and short dot style stitches. I let the fabric fall over the edge of the cotton fabric to show drape of the linen. The bottom fabric is a cotton refill bag for wholefoods which I cut up. I like the lightness of the fabric giving an airy feel , when it is held up in the light it feels natural and outdoorsy.
Layering the fabric was fun to do , I stitched raffia and naturally dyed wool through the fabric to give more texture to the piece.
Structure layering, and highlighting with different lengths of wool were my associated thoughts and words for this piece.
My third piece was stitched on the second half of the wholefoods cotton bag, I used 3 different wool piece in yellow ,red and green, stitching and gathering to represent the stitches on the arm of the Mexican inspired top.I stitched loosely creating creases, I was focused on a sense of repetition working on the piece, the flow of stitches. Loose, light, drape and wear were my associated words.

I left the cotton for a few days to fix the colour, once I had looked through my sample squares again I stitched the cotton rectangles together with my sewing machine to create an A4 fabric to stitch on.
I then decided to focus on the sense of scale of the tree image, using mohair in long stitches to outline the branches and using yellow scrunched up tissue paper to add texture and 3D definition to the fabric.
Texture, 3D, protruding, definition , dense were my associated thoughts and words for this piece.
