Written reflection for part 2

I feel my work has developed and grown quite alot from my first assignment, looking at the original drawing of the tree I began to wonder why I chose this particular drawing in my final selection and my connection to it. Age, history ,yellow, texture and wear came to mind, the tree is visible from the back window of our home of five years, it is a Victorian building and the garden is old, I feels like it has stories to tell. This age, decay, life story and history is portrayed in my sample papers, the use of nails and rust to age the turmeric dyed paper giving it a deeper level of age and imperfection that make you wonder about the story of the tree, our connection to nature and plants, the history and folklore around it. The aged and naturally dyed fabrics reminisent of my deep interest in folklore and the history of natural colour, an aged unfinished piece in some ways representing our loss of connection with nature ,the beauty of imperfection in mottled colour and the unfinished stitching leaving room for the ongoing story. When it came to stitching I chose black mohair ,the texture is fluffy to define the branches and straight lines with layers of light tissue paper to create the texture of the tree in bright yellow flower. I feel a connection to yellow, a happiness, a melancholy of the past. I would like to explore this more in my next assignment, the connection and why I chose yellow exploring storytelling and the history on a deeper level. I have been reading the folklore of human connection to plants which really inspired me with the piece. Poetry and short story writings by Authors such as Sylvia V. Linsteadt 'Our Lady of the Dark country' Stories, in particular a short story called 'Our lady of nettles' pg.41

' you have come for a story? place you hands on my stem, there where the hairs fringe and spike. Wait until the sting. Think of it like a trade. It wakes up your mind' .

Sharon Blackie ' If Women rose rooted' is also a writer I have been reading, stories of nature and folklore and our connection to the natural world.

Below in bold is my original reflection, after my formative feedback I reflected on our chat and agreed I had flipped a 180 and had consciously not written as deeply in this assignment compared to my first.

As I read over the course I recognised I'm more comfortable with the fabric stitching rather than my sketchbook. I have begun to look at textiles in a different closer way looking at detail, texture and drape.  I want to work more on my sketching and now see how work has to be built on starting with an initial idea ,working on quick sketches to get a feel for the project followed by more analytical thinking before actually beginning your stitching. I look forward to exploring stitches further and to work on larger pieces.  My natural dyes played a big part on this assignment, after my first formative feedback with my tutor she suggested I use natural dyes more in my work, I feel it adds to the feel of the piece and gives it an aged melancholic feel. Going forward I plan to sketch more and work on idea development. I also reorganised and tidied up my first assignment as suggested by my tutor as it wasn't as clear as it could of been. I have titled each section so it is easier to navigate.  I also looked over my work in a more critical way seeing what did and didn't work, e.g. my collage for section one and my black marker sketches. I feel it was good to experiment with these mediums but realised they were not something I wanted to move forward with.  I look forward to section three , colour studies.

My second piece is a continuation of the ideas around my first piece, age, decay, Winter, and the loss of connection with nature, the unfinished story . The beauty of death and the end but it never being really the end or ' finished' . I chose black to stitch long lines to highlight the journey and the stains and Marks representing the darker side of life,  mistakes, traumas, personal growth as we age and the' journey' .

In my third and final piece, the stitches are bright and colourful, texture of the yarns used are different ,some thick some thinner, loose stitches to show folds in the fabrics and flow and repetition of stitches.
