Research point 1. Kate Whitehead, textile artist

Many textile designers and artists choose to work with recycled, worn or even discarded textiles and materials.try to find an example of one such designer or artist and analyse how they select, apply and alter their chosen materials.

I have chosen Kate Whitehead ,textile artist and current resident artist,
Bradford school of art'
Kate ' salvedges the discarded, fixes the broken ' I love this sentiment of bringing new life to an old discarded piece of fabric through stitch creating something new.

'My work is a protest against the way textiles are consumed in western society. Tired of a world in which clothes are produced and thrown away without thought to the consequences; where the fashion industry and media impose identities on us.'

I particularly like this piece ,
Family, handwoven piece in found materials.

The drape of the fabric and use of colour, delicate with beautiful drape and texture.
Kate stitches and weaves fabric to create a new textile.

I love Kates use of materials and fabrics, the tears and aged fabric , light and flowing , hanging almost suspended in air it looks like it has the shape of a figure, almost like it is worn, wrapped around a body. The hanging tied tassel like pieces really add to the flow and drama of the piece. It gives me a feeling of nostalgia, you can feel the ' life story' of the piece. The use of old fabrics make you feel, the imperfections give it more interest.

This piece has a wonderful softness in texture and colour use, pops of pink and yellow, colours that represent femininity in a modern soft way. The triangles on the side jutting out , imperfect and beautiful in their imperfection. When you look closely the lines remind me of an old stone wall, aged and weathered.
